INDONESIA URGES STRONGER EU INVESTMENT AS LANDMARK FREE TRADE DEAL RATIFICATION
Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto urged stronger European investment and technology collaboration with Indonesia as the two sides prepare to ratify the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Speaking in Brussels, Prabowo emphasized the EU’s strength in science and finance and Indonesia’s strategic position within ASEAN, highlighting the agreement’s potential to boost global economic and geopolitical stability. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed his sentiments, praising the partnership while reaffirming Europe’s commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices. CEPA, concluded after a decade of negotiations, is set to expand market access and reduce trade barriers, with 80% of Indonesian exports to the EU expected to receive zero tariffs within two years. Sectors such as fisheries, textiles, renewable energy, and EVs will benefit significantly. The EU, currently Indonesia’s fifth-largest trading partner, sees untapped potential in the relationship. Indonesia, meanwhile, aims to boost its exports by over 50% and ensure fair treatment of its products, particularly in fisheries. Prabowo’s visit, including a meeting with Belgium’s King Philippe, marks a pivotal step in deepening bilateral ties and Indonesia’s global economic engagement.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/prabowo-urges-stronger-eu-investment-as-landmark-free-trade-deal-nears-ratification (ICE GIACARTA)
