INDONESIA'S PRESIDENT MOVES TO FINALIZE EU TRADE PACT AMID RISING U.S. TARIFF
Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, traveled to Brussels to finalize the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) with the European Union. This strategic visit comes amidst rising trade tensions with the United States, prompting Indonesia to diversify its trade partners. The IEU-CEPA, which has completed substantive negotiations and is expected to be signed in Jakarta in the third quarter of 2025, will grant zero-tariff access for many Indonesian products to the European market, marking a significant milestone for Indonesia's trade orientation in a turbulent global environment. The agreement holds substantial economic promise, projected to boost Indonesian exports to the EU by up to 50 percent and attract investment in key sectors like electric vehicles, renewable energy, and labor-intensive industries such as textiles, garments, footwear, palm oil, and fisheries. Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto highlighted the deal's role in positioning Indonesia as a strategic partner and ASEAN's economic anchor, especially with Indonesia's bid to join the OECD. Notably, negotiations also saw the EU soften its stance on its deforestation regulation, and specific concerns regarding local content and fishery exports were addressed, further solidifying the mutually beneficial nature of this pact.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/world/2025/07/13/prabowo-in-brussels-to-seal-eu-deal-amid-us-tariff-threat.html, https://jakartaglobe.id/business/prabowo-courts-eu-leaders-in-brussels-to-finalize-zerotariff-trade-deal (ICE GIACARTA)
