EU EASES DEFORESTATION RULES: INDONESIAN TRADE MINISTER

To support the completion of the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), the European Union has softened its stance on the enforcement of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) toward Indonesia. Indonesia's Trade Minister Budi Santoso shared this development during President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to Belgium, noting that the EU’s increased flexibility reflects its intention to forge a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership with Indonesia. The drawn-out negotiation process stemmed from complex diplomatic dynamics, but both parties have now finalized the substantive terms of the agreement. Santoso confirmed that all major components of IEU-CEPA are settled, with Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto affirming its completion. President Prabowo is expected to make an official announcement soon. Once enacted, IEU-CEPA will significantly enhance Indonesia’s access to European markets, offering expanded export opportunities and positioning the EU—whose global import volume reached US$6.6 trillion—as a vital alternative to markets like the United States. The agreement is anticipated to be a cornerstone for future bilateral economic and trade cooperation, reinforcing Indonesia’s global trade presence amid shifting regulatory landscapes.\Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/366081/eu-eases-deforestation-rules-indonesian-trade-minister?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=desktop&utm_campaign=top_news (ICE GIACARTA)
