UZBEKISTAN-CLIMATE-GASES-LAW

Uzbekistan establishes legal framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissionsUzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed the law on the limitation of greenhouse gas emissions, which was previously adopted by the lower house of parliament and approved by the country's Senate. The law came into force after its publication on Wednesday. The adopted legislation focuses on establishing procedures for the circulation of carbon units resulting from greenhouse gas emission reductions, as well as ensuring systematic control over emissions, the Senate's press service told Interfax."The law defines the fundamental principles of limiting greenhouse gas emissions, the framework and procedures for their monitoring, reporting and verification, as well as ownership rights over reduced greenhouse gases," the press service said.In accordance with the law, provisions have been made for maintaining a national greenhouse gas emissions registry, setting specific targets and implementing measures to finance and support activities in this field. The document also grants legal entities, individuals and private entrepreneurs the right to implement green projects.Under the new regulations, greenhouse gases reduced through green projects implemented in Uzbekistan will be fully transferred to state ownership, with this data recorded in a special carbon unit registry. Mandatory verification of carbon units reported for each green project is required.According to the Senate, the adoption of this law ensures Uzbekistan's fulfillment of its obligations under the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, creates necessary conditions for improving the environment and ecology, and promotes the country's sustainable economic development.
