INDIA'S SKINCARE AND COSMETICS IMPORTS SURGE:GLOBAL BRANDS CAPITALIZE ON GROWING DEMAND
Global beauty brands are finding increasing space on premium store shelves as demand rises in India. That’s reflected in the post-pandemic surge in imports of skincare and cosmetics. Import of makeup and skincare products rose to $171.9 million in FY25, from $80.9 million in FY20, according to data from the ministry of commerce and industry. The list includes lip and eye makeup, face creams and moisturising lotions. Shoppers Stop, which manages brands such as Estee Lauder, Shiseido, Bobbi Brown, Mac and Clinique in India, said the beauty market has been driven by the entry of hundreds of international brands that are cashing in on the shift toward premiumisation.“Indians are now more aware of international brands. People with higher disposable incomes seek high-quality, premium products, which are largely imported, more recently from South Korea or Japan, and even China,” said Biju Kassim, chief executive, beauty, at Shoppers Stop.Beiersdorf, Unilever, L’Oréal SA and Shiseido, among the world’s largest cosmetics companies, have identified India as a key growth driver, citing the country’s population and growing affinity for beauty products.Within the broad makeup category, ‘lip makeup preparations’ recorded the highest imports, at $61.2 million. Products from China led at $25 million, followed by Belgium ($6.5 million), the ($5.9 million), South Korea ($5.7 million) and the UAE ($5.1 million).Face cream imports surged nearly sevenfold to $53.6 million in FY25, from $7.7 million in FY20.
