Almaty airport expands capacity sixfold to 14 million passengers annuallyThe passenger capacity of Almaty International Airport has increased sixfold, from 2.5 million to 14 million travelers per year, following the opening of a new terminal, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced Monday.The president made the remarks during a meeting with Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), according to a statement from the presidential press service.Tokayev also noted that Kazakhstan is exploring the launch of new direct flights to New York, Tokyo, and Singapore. The country currently maintains direct air connections with more than 30 nations.During the talks, both sides emphasized the significance of a newly signed master plan for civil aviation cooperation between Kazakhstan and ICAO.In recognition of Sciacchitano’s contributions to strengthening international aviation ties, Tokayev awarded him the Dostyk (Friendship) Order of the First Degree.The new terminal’s construction began in May 2021 and was completed entirely through private investment. It commenced operations on June 1, 2024. (ICE ALMATY)
