Kazakhstan imposes quarantine after anthrax infects 19 in Akmola regionKazakh authorities have quarantined two villages in the country's north after 19 people contracted anthrax, Agriculture Minister Aidarbek Saparov said Tuesday. The outbreak in the Atbasar district of the Akmola region includes one patient in serious condition, with the others showing moderate symptoms. Authorities implemented quarantine measures on July 1 after laboratory tests confirmed three positive soil samples from areas where livestock were slaughtered and grazed."As soon as we received the lab results, we immediately instituted quarantine," Saparov said at a press briefing. Officials will conduct new soil tests after the quarantine period and lift restrictions if the results come back negative.Anthrax, caused by the highly resistant Bacillus anthracis spores, can remain dormant in soil for decades. Humans typically contract the disease through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. (ICE ALMATY)
