U.S. IMPOSES 32% IMPORT TARIFF ON INDONESIAN GOODS, EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that the 32% import tariff on all Indonesian products will remain in effect starting August 1, 2025, despite ongoing negotiations between the two countries. In a letter addressed to President Prabowo Subianto and shared publicly, Trump emphasized that the tariff is necessary to address what he described as a long-standing and unfair trade deficit with Indonesia. He warned that any retaliatory tariffs from Indonesia would prompt further increases beyond the 32% rate. However, he offered an alternative path: Indonesian companies that choose to manufacture in the U.S. would be exempt from the tariff, with fast-tracked approval processes promised for such investments. Trump also indicated that the tariff could be revised if Indonesia agrees to reform its trade policies and open its market more broadly to U.S. goods. The announcement was part of a broader tariff policy targeting multiple countries, with varying rates. While Thailand and Cambodia saw reductions in their tariff rates, Malaysia experienced a slight increase. Trump framed these measures as part of a broader effort to rebalance global trade in favor of U.S. interests.Source: https://en.tempo.co/read/2025693/no-discount-trump-decides-to-maintain-32-percent-import-tariff-on-indonesia  (ICE GIACARTA)
