The Union Cabinet has approved the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme to support employment generation, enhance employability, and improve social security across all sectors, with a special focus on the manufacturing sector. Under the Scheme, first-time employees will receive one month’s wage of up to USD 178, while employers will be incentivized for a period of two years for generating additional employment. For the manufacturing sector, benefits will be extended for another two years. The ELI Scheme was announced in the Union Budget 2024–25 as part of the Prime Minister’s package of five schemes to facilitate employment, skilling, and other opportunities for 41 million youth, with a total budget outlay of approximately USD 23.95 billion (₹2 lakh crore). With an outlay of approximately USD 11.91 billion (₹99,446 crore), the ELI Scheme aims to incentivize the creation of more than 35 million (3.5 crore) jobs over a two-year period. Among these, 19.2 million (1.92 crore) beneficiaries will be first-time entrants into the workforce. The benefits of the Scheme will be applicable to jobs created between August 1, 2025, and July 31, 2027. (ICE NEW DELHI)
