TOURISM MINISTRY LAUNCHES ‘DAWN OF CHRISTIANITY’ EXHIBITION IN ITALY’S ASSISI
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in cooperation with the Jordan Tourism Board, is organising the international travelling exhibition "Jordan: The Dawn of Christianity" in the historic city of Assisi, located in Italy’s Umbria region. The exhibition opened on Tuesday, July 1 and would run through August 2, 2025.According to a ministry statement, the exhibition would be held at the Palazzo Monte Frumentario in partnership with the Municipality of Assisi. The event follows the remarkable success of the exhibition’s earlier editions at the Vatican in February and March this year, the statement said. The exhibition aims to highlight the importance of religious tourism and promote Jordan as a premier Christian pilgrimage destination. It also positions the Kingdom as a spiritual and cultural bridge, strengthening its role in fostering interfaith understanding and international spiritual presence. The exhibition showcases five sites in Jordan officially recognised by the Vatican as Christian pilgrimage destinations: the Baptism Site (Bethany beyond the Jordan), Mount Nebo, Our Lady of the Mountain Church in Anjara, Tel Mar Elias, and Machaerus Fortress. Leading among them is the Baptism Site, where Jesus Christ was baptised by John the Baptist, considered one of the holiest Christian sites in the world and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site."Jordan: The Dawn of Christianity" offers a powerful invitation for pilgrimage, reflection, and connection, bringing Jordan and Assisi together in a cross-border dialogue of faith at a time when the world is in profound need of hope and spiritual renewal, the statement said.Assisi holds a unique place in Jordanian-Italian relations. In 2019, His Majesty King Abdullah was awarded the Lamp of Peace in Assisi in recognition of his unwavering commitment to promoting human rights, religious tolerance and peace in the Middle East and around the world. The award also honoured Jordan’s efforts, under His Majesty’s leadership, in hosting refugees and fostering coexistence.Jordan has long been a focal point for the international Christian community, including during the historic 2014 visit of Pope Francis to the Kingdom. During the visit, the Pope visited the Baptism Site on the Jordan River and praised Jordan’s model of peaceful coexistence and its unwavering commitment to interfaith harmony in the region.
