VIỆT NAM, VATICAN SEEK TO DEEPEN BILATERAL TIES

During her visit to Italy, Vice President Võ Thị Ánh Xuân met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Monday, underscoring growing Việt Nam–Vatican relations. Pope Leo welcomed the meeting, praised the positive momentum in bilateral ties—including the recent upgrade of the Holy See's Resident Representative in Việt Nam—and voiced support for continued engagement through the Việt Nam–Holy See Joint Working Group. Vice President Xuân congratulated the Pope on his election and reaffirmed Việt Nam’s commitment to strengthening cooperation aligned with the aspirations of Vietnamese Catholics. She invited the Pope and Vatican officials to visit Việt Nam, which he welcomed, expressing a desire to demonstrate solidarity with the local Catholic community. Xuân also held talks with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, where both sides agreed to sustain the Joint Working Group and promote pastoral cooperation.
