Most Kazakh landfills reach capacity, while new landfill construction stallsOver 90% of municipal landfills in multiple Kazakh regions have reached full capacity, Ecology Minister Yerlan Nysanbayev reported Wednesday."Most landfills are filled and require reclamation. Landfills in regional centers of the Atyrau, West Kazakhstan, Turkestan, North Kazakhstan regions, and the city of Shymkent are filled to over 90%, in Nur-Sultan to 98%, and in the city of Zhezkazgan are overflowing," Nysanbayev said at a government meeting Wednesday in Nur-Sultan. Nysanbayev revealed that regional authorities have completed only 7 of 100 planned new landfills since the 2023 comprehensive waste management plan was approved."Documentation exists for 23 sites and is being prepared for 18 others, while 52 locations – including 22 in the Abai region and 4 in the Akmola region. Eight landfills in the North Kazakhstan region now operate with expired permits that authorities haven't renewed. Construction of new landfills has stalled nationwide due to a lack of funding," the Minister said.The ministry proposes financing 43 new landfills worth 53 billion tenge across 11 regions using recycling fees," he said.
