INDONESIA PLANS NUCLEAR PLANTS WITH POTENTIAL 24,000 TONS OF URANIUM IN RESERVE

Indonesia is advancing its nuclear energy agenda by drafting a government regulation to manage radioactive materials, particularly uranium reserves identified in West Kalimantan. Led by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the regulation aims to enable uranium purification and processing for power generation, while establishing a licensing framework for radioactive mining under strict oversight. Key agencies involved include BRIN, Bapeten, and the ESDM Ministry, with environmental safeguards being a central consideration. As outlined in the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), Indonesia plans to add 69.5 GW of power capacity, including 500 MW from nuclear energy—split between Sumatra and Kalimantan. The Melawi regency in West Kalimantan, with an estimated 24,112 tons of uranium, is central to this strategy. While feasibility studies and policy decisions are still pending, Indonesia is evaluating nuclear technologies from China and Russia, signaling its intent to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-plans-nuclear-plants-with-potential-24000-tons-of-uranium-in-reserve (ICE GIACARTA)
