DECARBONIZATION OPENS OPPORTUNITY FOR INDONESIA TO LEAD GREEN CEMENT INDUSTRY
Indonesia holds strong potential to become a leading producer of green cement in Southeast Asia, thanks to its massive cement production capacity of over 100 million tons annually. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), this capacity can be leveraged to decarbonize the national industry and meet growing global demand for sustainable products. The cement, fertilizer, and iron and steel sectors currently account for nearly 82% of industrial emissions and consume 85% of coal. PT Semen Indonesia has emerged as a pioneer in green cement production, and CSIS recommends strategies such as using alternative fuels, reducing clinker use, adopting carbon capture technologies, and implementing green certification to support Indonesia’s transition to a low-carbon industrial base. The fertilizer industry is also moving toward sustainability, with PT Pupuk Indonesia leading the way in green ammonia production. As one of Southeast Asia’s largest urea producers, Indonesia is well-positioned to transform its fertilizer sector to align with global low-carbon standards. Green ammonia is gaining recognition not only as an eco-friendly fertilizer but also as a strategic alternative fuel, particularly in the power and maritime sectors. With abundant renewable energy resources and experience in low-carbon production, Indonesia could play a key role in the global green ammonia supply chain. The launch of the GAIA initiative at COP29, the world’s first hybrid green ammonia facility, underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable industrial transformation.Source: https://lestari.kompas.com/read/2025/06/21/170800286/dekarbonisasi-buka-peluang-indonesia-pimpin-industri-semen-hijau (ICE GIACARTA)
