IT MIGHT BE MORE EXPENSIVE TO HIRE FOREIGNERS IN POLAND UNDER THE NEW LAW
Data from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) from the end of April shows that there are already 1.22 million foreigners working legally in Poland. This is an increase by 80 thousand from a year earlier and almost nine times more than in 2015. They are mainly Ukrainians (802 thousand) who account for two-thirds of foreigners in ZUS records. There is also a rapid increase in workers from Belarus (136.3 thousand), Georgia (26 thousand), India (23.5 thousand), Colombia (16.6 thousand) and the Philippines (15.6 thousand). ZUS data does not yet show the effects of the new Law on the Conditions of Permissibility of Entrusting Work to Foreigners, which came into force at the beginning of June. The new regulations raise hope, though also anxiety among employers and professional employment agencies recruiting foreign workers. “On the one hand, the new regulations herald certain simplifications, while on the other hand, the rules for legalization of work and residence of foreigners have been tightened, new obligations have been imposed on employers and harsher penalties have been provided for failure to comply with formalities,” enumerates Nadia Winiarska, employment expert at the Lewiatan Confederation (ICE VARSAVIA)
