KAZAKHSTAN-CUSTOMS-CHECKPOINTS-MODERNIZATION

Kazakhstan to modernize five more border checkpoints by year's endKazakhstan has upgraded six customs checkpoints and plans to modernize five more by the end of this year, said Bakytzhan Slyamov, deputy chairman of the State Revenue Committee under the Finance Ministry."To date, six checkpoints have been modernized, including three on the border with China: Nur Zholy, Kalzhat, and Alakol, and three on the border with Uzbekistan: Baurzhan Konyspayev, Kaplanbek, and Atameken. Five additional checkpoints will be equipped in phases by the end of 2024, including Temir Baba on the Turkmenistan border, Kazygurt and Tazhen on the Uzbekistan border, and Maikapchagai and Bakhty on the Kyrgyzstan border," Slyamov announced at a briefing in Astana on Thursday. The upgrades include advanced inspection systems that allow vehicles to be scanned without physical searches, electronic queue management, and pre-arrival notification systems, reducing processing time to 30 minutes."Modernization efforts are ongoing without full checkpoint closures, Slyamov noted. Despite construction work, throughput capacity has surged from 640,000 vehicles in 2022 to 1.4 million in 2024, a 150% increase," he said.Since the start of the year, 605,700 vehicles have passed through Kazakhstan’s external Eurasian Economic Union border checkpoints, marking a 25% rise compared to the same period last year. Customs revenue reached 1.6 trillion tenge, exceeding the target by 6%. (ICE ALMATY)
