KAZAKHSTAN-QARMET-STEEL-PRODUCTION

Qarmet increases crude steel production by 13% to 1.5 mln tonnes in Jan-May 2025Metallurgical plant Qarmet (formerly ArcelorMittal Temirtau) produced 1.5 million tonnes of crude steel in the first five months of 2025, the press service of the Republic's Prime Minister reported."The enterprise increased crude steel production by 13% to 1.5 million tonnes during the five months of the current year," stated the report following Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov's visit to the plant. The head of government was informed that converters No. 1 and No. 2 underwent major repairs last year, enabling an increase in steel smelting volumes. Bektenov also reviewed the progress of construction on coke batteries No. 8 and No. 9. This investment project, with a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of dry coke per year, is being implemented jointly with the Chinese company ACRE Coking&Refractory Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd., under agreements reached during the Prime Minister's working visit to the People's Republic of China on November 5, 2024.Qarmet management reported on the implementation of a project to build a new casting-rolling complex. The commissioning of the complex will facilitate the production of premium-grade steel for the automotive, chemical, oil, construction, and other industries. The project will expand the market geography for Kazakh steel, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact during production.A project for an industrial belt of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) around the plant was also presented. The SMEs will produce high-value-added goods – ranging from packaging and filters to lighting fixtures and steel products. The international concern ArcelorMittal owned Kazakhstan's largest steel plant, ArcelorMittal Temirtau, since the 1990s. In the second half of 2023, cooperation was terminated at the initiative of the Kazakh authorities due to repeated accidents resulting in worker fatalities. The new investor for the former ArcelorMittal assets is Andrey Lavrentyev, co-owner of the Kazakh automaker Allur. The new investor renamed ArcelorMittal Temirtau to Qarmet. (ICE ALMATY)
