INDONESIA RANKED 2ND IN GLOBAL SOLAR POTENTIAL ON FORMER COAL MINE LANDS

Indonesia has the world’s second-highest potential for solar energy development on former coal mine lands, with a capacity estimated at 59.45 gigawatts, according to a Global Energy Monitor (GEM) report. Despite this, only 600 megawatts in solar projects have been announced so far. The report identifies 26 coal mine sites in Indonesia that could host renewable energy projects, with much of the potential concentrated in South and East Kalimantan. However, development has been slow, with state-owned PT Bukit Asam’s earlier announcements seeing little progress.GEM highlights that repurposing mining land for solar power offers strategic advantages: the sites are typically unused, near existing infrastructure, and supported by a skilled local workforce. If realized, such a transition could create over half a million jobs, offsetting global coal job losses and contributing to clean energy goals. However, GEM stresses that effective policy frameworks, investment incentives, and community-inclusive planning are essential to unlocking this opportunity. This solar transformation could redefine Indonesia's energy future while addressing the social and environmental legacy of coal.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4543/society-environment-and-culture/indonesia-ranked-2nd-in-global-solar-potential-on-former-coal-mine-lands (ICE GIACARTA)
