Kazakhstan investigates reported leak of 16 mln citizens' personal dataKazakhstan’s Committee on Information Security of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and the Aerospace Industry is investigating reports of a personal data leak affecting 16 million citizens, the ministry’s press service said Tuesday.The probe is being conducted in cooperation with law enforcement and specialized agencies."Preliminary analysis suggests the personal data may have been leaked through private information systems. So far, no hacker attacks or leaks from state databases have been detected," the ministry said in a statement."It is premature to draw final conclusions or confirm the accuracy of the information before the investigation is completed," the press service added.The ministry said that citizens whose personal data is confirmed to be part of the leak will be notified through their accounts on the e-government portal."The ministry is closely monitoring the situation. Additional updates will be provided once the investigation concludes," the statement says.On Monday, several media outlets reported that sensitive personal data - including national identification numbers (IIN), phone numbers, addresses, full names and other details - of 16 million Kazakh citizens had been exposed online.Kazakhstan’s population tops 20 million.
