INDONESIA TO BUILD FIRST OCEAN CURRENT POWER PLANT, WORTH IDR3.5 TRILLION

Indonesia is set to build its first tidal power plant (PLTAL) as part of the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), with an investment of US$220 million (IDR3.57 trillion) and a total capacity of 40 megawatts (MW). The project will be split evenly between two locations in East Nusa Tenggara and is aimed at supporting the country’s energy transition, energy security, and sustainable use of marine resources. The initiative involves collaboration with international partners such as SBS Indonesia, NOVA Innovation (UK), PT Pertamina Power Indonesia, and Tidal Bridge (Netherlands). The PLTAL will utilize various marine-based technologies, including tidal flows, ocean waves, ocean currents, temperature differences in sea layers, and salinity gradients. This project is part of a broader RUPTL target to add 69.5 GW of power capacity by 2034, with 76% coming from renewable energy and storage. The renewable portion includes solar (17.1 GW), hydro (11.7 GW), wind (7.2 GW), geothermal (5.2 GW), bioenergy (0.9 GW), and nuclear (0.5 GW), while storage will be supported by 6 GW of batteries and 4.3 GW of pumped hydro. Fossil fuels will make up the remaining 24% of the energy mix.Source: https://katadata.co.id/berita/energi/684fe79aaa0d2/pemerintah-akan-bangun-pembangkit-listrik-arus-laut-pertama-di-indonesia-rp3-5-t (ICE GIACARTA)
