Almaty Mayor proposes simultaneous construction of additional metro linesAlmaty Mayor Darkhan Satybaldy has directed city officials to assess the feasibility of constructing two additional metro lines simultaneously, rather than waiting for the completion of the first line, his press service announced Sunday.During an inspection of the under-construction Kalkaman station, Satybaldy emphasized the metro's critical role in improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion. "We must study launching construction of two additional lines without waiting three years for completion to Barlyk station," he stated.The Almaty Metro's first line, operational since December 2011, currently spans 13.4 kilometers with 11 stations. Construction continues on a 1.98-kilometer extension from Bauyrzhan Momyshuly station to Kalkaman station, with the left tunnel completed and the right tunnel 887 meters finished. Station construction is 28% complete, targeting a January 2026 opening.City officials reported that design documentation is ready for the next phase, extending the line three stations to Barlyk market, a three-year project. Meanwhile, feasibility studies are underway for a second line connecting Zhibek Zholy station to the airport and a third line linking Sairan station to Alatau city. (ICE ALMATY)
