PRICES RISING SLOWER, BUT TOO FAST FOR POLES TO START BUYING MORE

In May, prices in shops were 5.7 per cent more expensive than a year ago. The price increase is stabilising, but consumers are cautious and do not want to spend more. Even on basic products. "Prices continue to rise mainly due to the continuing high costs of production (energy, fuel, packaging), logistics and labour. However, the current increase is not spiking, which is partly due to the expiry of the high base effect: from April 2024, a higher VAT rate on food (5 per cent, previously temporarily reduced to 0 per cent - ed.) is in force, which has pushed up prices on an annualised basis," notes Agnieszka Gawlik, Ph.D., from WSB Merito.
