EU EYES INDONESIA'S CARBON TRADING TO ACHIEVE 2040 CLIMATE TARGET

As the European Union considers using international carbon credits to ease the path to its 2040 climate targets, Indonesia has emerged as a key player in the global carbon trading market due to its vast tropical forests and expanding green projects. Carbon credits from Indonesia, including forest conservation and energy transition initiatives, are being eyed as potential tools for EU countries to offset emissions. However, this strategy has drawn criticism from the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC), which warns that relying on foreign credits could divert crucial investments away from Europe’s own green transformation. The ESABCC emphasized that such reliance could undermine domestic value creation and slow the EU’s industrial modernization. While Indonesia stands to benefit financially from increased demand for carbon credits, the EU's past experience with weak and cheap international credits—banned in 2013 after damaging the carbon market—raises concerns about environmental integrity. Although international carbon trading supports developing countries like Indonesia, the EU’s climate advisers insist that a domestic, emissions-free energy shift remains essential for long-term sustainability and resilience.Source: https://hijau.bisnis.com/read/20250603/653/1882070/uni-eropa-lirik-perdagangan-karbon-ri-demi-capai-target-iklim-2040 (ICE GIACARTA)
