INDONESIA TARGETS US$618 B IN SUSTAINABLE DOWNSTREAM INVESTMENT

Indonesia is positioning itself as a global hub for sustainable industrial development, backed by a US$618 billion investment roadmap in downstream sectors through 2040. Speaking at the ESG Forum 2025, Deputy Minister Eddy Junaedi emphasized that the country’s economic strategy is now tightly linked to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. Under President Prabowo Subianto’s medium-term plan, Indonesia aims for 8% annual growth and over Rp13,000 trillion in total investment, with a strong focus on domestic processing of natural resources like nickel, tin, and bauxite into high-value products such as EV batteries and stainless steel. With nearly 30% of Q1 2025 investment going to downstream industries—bolstered by a raw nickel export ban—Indonesia is rapidly expanding its industrial base, boasting 188 nickel smelters and six EV battery facilities. However, Junaedi stressed that sustainable growth requires ESG compliance, noting that global markets increasingly demand low-emission materials. The government is supporting this shift through instruments like the Sustainable Investment Guidelines (SIG), aiming to align business practices with international standards and help meet Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero emission target.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4426/policy-and-governance/indonesia-targets-us-618-b-in-sustainable-downstream-investment-bkpm (ICE GIACARTA)
