INNOVATION PUSH THREATENED BY WORKFORCE GAPS

Despite producing tens of thousands of IT graduates annually, Việt Nam faces a critical shortage of job-ready professionals in science and technology (S&T), threatening its innovation-driven growth. The country needs 700,000 new IT workers by year-end but is expected to supply only 500,000, with just 30% of graduates meeting job requirements. Experts attribute this gap to outdated, theory-heavy education, weak university-industry links, and underfunded research environments. Most of the S&T workforce is concentrated in Hà Nội and HCM City, while other regions lack quality researchers. Low public R&D investment, limited international visibility, and poor talent retention further hinder progress. The government aims to improve research rankings and boost STEM enrolment, but experts stress the need for flexible curricula, better career guidance, and stronger collaboration with the private sector. Without bold reforms in education, funding, and talent development, Việt Nam risks falling behind in the global knowledge economy it aspires to lead. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
