It produces only water as a by-product, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and helping reduce pollution. From an energy security standpoint, locally produced hydrogen—from solar, wind, and geothermal sources—can reduce reliance on costly fossil fuel imports, stabilise energy prices, and strengthen the economy. Economically, green hydrogen supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals by fostering green industries and job creation.From production facilities to distribution networks, the entire value chain offers opportunities for employment, especially for young people.Yet no innovation is without challenges. Green hydrogen technology requires significant upfront investment in infrastructure such as electrolyzers, pipelines, and storage. Kenya must also invest in research and development to find cost-effective production methods and bridge the existing knowledge gap through public education. These hurdles are surmountable. By implementing its strategy effectively and forging strong public-private partnerships, Kenya can unlock the full potential of green hydrogen.The country has the resources, talent, and determination to lead this transition.
