GREEN HYDROGEN IS KENYA’S NEXT ENERGY FRONTIER
Kenya has set an ambitious target to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2030 through increased use of renewable sources for electricity generation.Recently, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum launched the country’s green hydrogen strategy and roadmap, outlining the government’s commitment to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. This strategy positions green hydrogen as a key pillar of Kenya’s development agenda—one that supports sustainable socio-economic growth and aligns with the nation’s broader vision for environmental responsibility. Research confirms Kenya has abundant renewable resources to support large-scale green hydrogen production without compromising electricity supply to consumers. Moreover, the development of a green hydrogen industry is expected to accelerate investment in power generation and transmission infrastructure, ultimately improving electricity services for all Kenyans.Producing hydrogen using clean electricity and water presents an opportunity. It is a natural next step in Kenya’s journey toward a green economy, propelled by innovation and a longstanding focus on sustainability. Environmentally, green hydrogen is clean. It produces only water as a by-product, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and helping reduce pollution. From an energy security standpoint, locally produced hydrogen—from solar, wind, and geothermal sources—can reduce reliance on costly fossil fuel imports, stabilise energy prices, and strengthen the economy. Economically, green hydrogen supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals by fostering green industries and job creation. From production facilities to distribution networks, the entire value chain offers opportunities for employment, especially for young people.Yet no innovation is without challenges. Green hydrogen technology requires significant upfront investment in infrastructure such as electrolyzers, pipelines, and storage. Kenya must also invest in research and development to find cost-effective production methods and bridge the existing knowledge gap through public education. These hurdles are surmountable. By implementing its strategy effectively and forging strong public-private partnerships, Kenya can unlock the full potential of green hydrogen. The country has the resources, talent, and determination to lead this transition. Continued investment in renewable energy and broad collaboration will ensure green hydrogen plays a central role in powering Kenya’s future—cleanly, reliably, and inclusively. Now is the time to build public awareness and engage communities so that every Kenyan can participate in this transformative shift. Green hydrogen offers a pathway not just to energy independence, but to a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come. (ICE NAIROBI)
