Astana, Moscow to study technical feasibility of increasing Russian oil supplies to China via KazakhstanThe Energy Ministries of Kazakhstan and Russia have formed a working group to assess the technical feasibility of expanding Russian oil supplies to China through Kazakhstan, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports, citing the ministry."A working group established by the Energy Ministries of Kazakhstan and Russia, with the involvement of relevant business entities from both sides, is currently addressing technical aspects related to expanding the capacity of the trunk oil pipelines in Russia and Kazakhstan. This aims to increase transit volumes of Russian oil to China," the ministry stated in response to an agency inquiry.The Energy Ministry clarified that if expansion of existing trunk pipeline sections is required, investment volumes and project timelines will be determined based on final decisions mutually agreed upon by the parties.Earlier reports indicated that China proposed Russia increase annual oil supplies via Kazakhstan by 2.5 million tonnes. Russia has already expressed readiness to accommodate this request."This is a proposal from the Chinese side, and we are prepared to ensure such supplies. However, specific technological solutions need to be implemented," stated Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, emphasizing that the supplies would involve Russian oil transiting Kazakhstan.He further noted, "Certain measures must be undertaken in pipeline transportation infrastructure, and work on this is currently underway."
