MARITIME TRANSPORT MAINTAINS STRONG GROWTH

Vietnam’s maritime and inland waterway transport sectors recorded significant growth in the first four months of 2025, signaling a recovery in trade and logistics. According to VIMAWA, cargo handled through ports reached 370.5 million tonnes, up 11% year-on-year. Container cargo was a key driver, with 10.52 million TEUs, rising 11%, including notable increases in both imports and exports (each up 14%). Localities such as HCM City, Vũng Tàu, and Hải Phòng showed strong performance, while provinces like Quảng Ngãi and Cần Thơ posted impressive double-digit growth. In contrast, Đà Nẵng and parts of the central region saw declines. Domestic waterway transport surged, especially in the north and south, though the central region lagged. As of April, over 17,000 foreign ships and nearly 19,800 domestic vessels had transited Vietnam’s ports, up 7% and 17% respectively. By May, cargo volume is projected to hit 464 million tonnes, reflecting continued momentum in Vietnam’s logistics sector. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
