SMBs provided 90% of jobs in Almaty in 2024 — governmentKazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov reviewed Almaty’s socio-economic development, e-commerce infrastructure, and hospitality industry during a working trip, the government’s press service reported.“Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) play a crucial role in the city’s economy. By the end of last year, the share of SMBs in the gross regional product grew to 60.3%. The sector provides jobs for 90% of the city’s total workforce, or 972,100 people,” stated the press release, citing a report by Almaty Deputy Akim Alisher Abdykadyrov.According to his data, Almaty currently accounts for 95.2% of the country’s total volume of online retail goods sales and 93.2% of online service sales.It was also reported that in Q1 2025, the metropolis’s short-term economic indicator accelerated to 9.1%. Key drivers of growth included sectors such as transportation (+23.9%), construction (+21.3%), and manufacturing (+17.6%).In April, Almaty recorded the highest business activity index in the country at 57.9%. Dynamic economic development led to a 14.6% increase in local budget revenues.The city leads the nation in investment volumes. Over the first four months of this year, 541.3 billion tenge (a 35.6% increase) was attracted in fixed capital investments.As of April 1, 2025, Almaty’s population stood at 2.306 million.
