INDONESIA REOPENS SALT IMPORTS AMID INDUSTRY RAW MATERIAL SHORTAGE
Indonesia has reopened salt imports in response to pressure from domestic industries facing raw material shortages, including sectors like pharmaceuticals and food and beverage manufacturing. Chief Food Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated that the government had to delay its planned salt import ban—originally set for January 2025 under Presidential Regulation No. 126 of 2022—until 2027 due to inadequate local production capacity. The revised timeline gives the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry time to build domestic salt processing infrastructure to meet national demand. The decision followed a cabinet-level meeting led by President Prabowo in February, where officials acknowledged that Indonesia is still far from achieving salt self-sufficiency, especially during high-demand periods like Ramadan. In 2024, Indonesia imported 2.75 million tons of salt, mainly from Australia and India. The government now aims to reduce dependency on imports and strengthen domestic production of industrial-grade salt over the next two years.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-reopens-salt-imports-as-industries-face-raw-material-shortage (ICE GIACARTA)
