INDONESIA SECURES AUSTRALIA’S SUPPORT FOR OECD, CPTPP MEMBERSHIP
During his visit to Jakarta, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged strong support for Indonesia’s bids to join both the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Speaking alongside President Prabowo Subianto, Albanese affirmed Australia’s backing, emphasizing Indonesia’s central role in the Indo-Pacific’s prosperity and security. Prabowo welcomed the support, especially as Australia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the CPTPP. The leaders also agreed to strengthen trade and investment ties amid growing global economic uncertainty. Indonesia is pursuing OECD membership as part of its ambition to become a high-income nation, aiming to join by 2027. At the same time, its CPTPP candidacy, submitted in September 2024, is seen as a strategic move to expand into non-traditional markets like Latin America and diversify beyond major economies like the US. Entry into both groups requires meeting high standards and gaining approval from existing members. Despite a recent dip in bilateral trade, with Indonesia running a $1.1 billion deficit in Q1 2025, the country remains committed to deepening international partnerships to enhance its economic resilience.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/australias-albanese-wants-indonesia-in-cptpp-and-oecd (ICE GIACARTA)
