VIETNAM SEEKS WB SUPPORT FOR LARGE-SCALE INFRASTRUCTURE, GREEN GROWTH

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged the World Bank (WB) to support Vietnam’s strategic development efforts, including large-scale infrastructure, green growth, and digital transformation. During a meeting with WB Country Director Mariam J. Sherman on May 15 in Hanoi, Chinh requested reforms in WB lending procedures and alignment with Vietnam’s priorities, emphasizing green growth, digital economy, circular economy, and economic resilience. Vietnam is seeking over US$11 billion in WB loans over five years, focusing on renewable energy, climate-resilient agriculture, and key transport projects in the Mekong Delta. Chinh specifically highlighted the US$67 billion North-South high-speed railway, set to begin in 2026, as a priority. Sherman praised Vietnam’s progress and affirmed the WB’s support, stressing the need to accelerate project preparation and execution. Chinh proposed a strategic partnership mechanism with the WB, streamlining administrative processes, and deeper collaboration at all levels. Sherman agreed to advance the proposals and explore more concessional financing options. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
