ASHGHAL BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF ADVANCED RESEARCH LABORATORIES
The project aims to strengthen Qatar’s veterinary and agricultural research through the development of advanced laboratories in the Old Airport area, Al Sheehaniya, and Qatar Science and Technology Park.In a significant step towards bolstering Qatar’s research capacity in agriculture and veterinary sciences, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) announced on 7 May the launch of a comprehensive project to design and construct a network of new research laboratories. This strategic initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality, aims to modernise and expand the country’s research infrastructure while aligning with the broader goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.According to Engineer Ahmed Saleh, the Project Manager, the new facilities are designed to meet the highest international standards, offering a state-of-the-art working environment for scientists and researchers, as reported by Ashghal. The development spans three distinct sites: a full renovation of the veterinary laboratories in the Old Airport area, the construction of a new agricultural research laboratory in Al Sheehaniya, and the establishment of high-tech laboratories at Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). The renovation of the veterinary laboratory in the Old Airport area is a cornerstone of the project.Engineer Asmaa Al-Musallmani, Deputy Head of Health Projects Section, confirmed that work is already underway and is expected to conclude by the second quarter of 2026.She emphasised that approximately 55% of the materials used in the project will be sourced locally. These include steel, iron, mechanical and electrical equipment, glass, aluminium, and woodworks—highlighting a strong reliance on domestic production to drive both quality and sustainability.Al-Musallmani further elaborated on the scope of the redevelopment, stating that the existing structure will undergo extensive upgrades. These will include enhancements to structural integrity, modernisation of laboratory units, and the addition of a fully equipped facility for conducting veterinary autopsies. She reiterated the department’s commitment to health and safety standards, quality assurance, and the integration of advanced technologies throughout the project. The new agricultural research laboratory in Al Sheehaniya, meanwhile, will span 1,191 square metres and serve as a centralised hub for scientific study in the agricultural field.Project Engineer Omar Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud described the facility as an “integrated centre” designed to accommodate various types of research. It will feature specialised laboratories for sample reception and preparation, physical and chemical processing, spectroscopy, and soil extraction. In addition to research spaces, the facility will include essential support structures such as administrative offices, meeting rooms, and dedicated storage areas for chemicals and laboratory equipment. At Qatar Science and Technology Park, three units—104, 105, and 106—are being converted into cutting-edge research spaces.Project Engineer Fahad Al Abdullah shared that these laboratories will house a pesticide lab, a biotechnology and plant pathology lab, and a herbs and seeds lab.The units will also include sample storage areas, researcher offices, and meeting facilities. Al Abdullah noted that all work will adhere to the rigorous guidelines set by Qatar Foundation, ensuring the highest benchmarks in quality, innovation, and functionality. In keeping with Qatar’s broader environmental and cultural goals, the design of these laboratories integrates sustainable construction practices. All three sites—the Old Airport veterinary lab, the Al Sheehaniya agricultural facility, and the QSTP research units—have been planned to reflect Qatari cultural identity while also embracing modern principles of sustainability. This includes energy and water efficiency measures, use of environmentally friendly and low-emission materials, and advanced fire safety systems.
