Kazakhstan doubles barley exports in seven months, with Iran as top buyerKazakhstan exported 1.55 million metric tonnes of barley from September 2024 through March 2025, more than double the 780,000 tonnes shipped during the same period last agricultural year, according to Yevgeny Karabanov, head of analytics at the Grain Union.Iran emerged as the primary destination, purchasing 926,000 tonnes compared to just 32,000 tonnes a year earlier. "The surge follows Kazakhstan’s strong barley harvest (3.84 million tonnes) and reduced exports from traditional Iranian suppliers like Russia, Ukraine, and  European nations due to tightened sanctions against Iran affecting shipping and payments," Karabanov noted in a Telegram post.China, previously Kazakhstan’s leading barley buyer, cut imports by one-third to 391,600 tonnes amid shifting trade patterns. The Grain Union projects that total 2024/25 barley exports will reach 1.85 million tons.Kazakhstan harvested over 26 million tonnes of grain in 2024, with 6.9 million tonnes exported from September through April, a 54% year-over-year increase.
