MUARA LABOH GEOTHERMAL PROJECT REACHES FINANCIAL CLOSE FOR EXPANSION

The Muara Laboh geothermal project in West Sumatra has reached financial close for its second unit, allowing construction to begin. Operated by Supreme Energy Muara Laboh (SEML), a joint venture involving Supreme Energy, Sumitomo Corporation, and Inpex, the project’s first 85 MW unit has been operational since 2019. The second unit, with a planned capacity of at least 80 MW, is expected to begin operations in 2027. This expansion aligns with Indonesia’s clean energy push and has secured financing through a mix of institutions, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), with total investment nearing $500 million. The financing is part of a broader regional decarbonization effort under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), which has pledged significant funding toward renewable energy projects. JBIC’s contribution includes a $138 million loan, while ADB added $92.6 million. A third 60 MW unit is also planned for 2033. The electricity from the new units will be sold to state-owned utility PLN, with pricing guided by a 2022 presidential decree on geothermal power tariffs.Source:https://jakartaglobe.id/business/japanbacked-muara-laboh-geothermal-reaches-financial-close-for-expansion (ICE GIACARTA)
