INDONESIA TO DEVELOP MAKASSAR PORT AS NEW EXPORT HUB
The Indonesian government plans to develop Makassar Port in South Sulawesi into a major export hub, complementing existing ports in Tanjung Priok and Surabaya. Strategically located for trade with Asia, Europe, and the Americas, Makassar Port currently operates below its 2 million TEUs ((twenty-foot equivalent units) capacity, but expansion will follow once usage increases. This initiative aims to reduce logistics costs by optimizing shipping routes and travel times. The plan supports broader efforts to develop eastern Indonesia, especially regions with growing industries like nickel and special economic zones. State-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (PT Pelindo), the Ministry of Transportation, and the American Chamber of Commerce are also exploring new shipping routes to the U.S., including one to Los Angeles, to enhance efficiency and reinforce Indonesia's maritime strength.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/353529/indonesia-to-develop-makassar-port-as-new-export-hub (ICE GIACARTA)
