ETHIOPIA: SIDAMA REGIONAL STATE DEPOSITS OVER 176 KILOGRAMS OF GOLD TO NATIONAL

The Sidama Regional State has deposited more than 176 kilograms of gold to the National Bank of Ethiopia during the first nine months of the current fiscal year, according to the Regional Mining and Energy Agency. The agency also reported that the mining sector has created employment opportunities for over 4,000 youth in the same period. In an interview with Addis Zemen, Ato Mesfin Mechuko, Director General of the Regional Mining and Energy Agency, revealed that a total of 176.2 kilograms of gold was deposited by gold-producing associations and licensed dealers. Of this, 10.2 kilograms were mined by associations while the remaining 166 kilograms were collected by dealers.Ato Mesfin emphasized that dealers, who are legally authorized to purchase gold from various sources and deliver it to the National Bank, have significantly increased their contributions compared to previous years. He highlighted that, unlike in the past when dealers supplied lower quantities, this year’s figures reflected an exceptional rise in the amount of gold submitted. He noted that most of the region’s gold is traditionally extracted by associations holding legal production licenses. However, he also pointed out that some producers have partnered with investors to adopt modern extraction methods. In addition to gold, the region has produced 3,630 tons of industrial minerals, including talc and feldspar, which have been marketed. Furthermore, 65 tons of a semi-precious gemstone known as Rutile were produced and sold, primarily in raw form. Initiatives are underway to process such minerals locally and add value before export. The mining sector also surpassed its financial targets, collecting Birr 12 million in revenue, Birr 1 million birr more than the projected Birr 11 million, from royalties and other payments, including income from agricultural activities linked to mining operations.
