ETHIOPIA: BALE MOUNTAINS SEE TOURISM BOOM
The Oromia Regional State has generated over Birr 84 million in tourism revenue over the past eight months, from a surge in visitors to the Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP), now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.More than 34,000 tourists - over 31,000 domestic and 3,400 foreign - visited the area, contributing Birr 71 million and Birr 13.3 million respectively to the local economy.Since BMNP’s UNESCO inscription in 2023, visitor numbers and investments have soared. New hotels, eco-lodges, and recreation centers are under construction in Bale Robe and within the park.BMNP Tourism Warden Geremew Mebratu noted the park now receives 37 visitors daily, with plans to boost this to 181 within two years through infrastructure upgrades and global promotion. Officials invite travelers to explore Bale's natural beauty and cultural richness as it rises on the global tourism map. (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
