KazMunayGas will build pipeline to carry gasoline, diesel from Shymkent refinery to AlmatyA pipeline carrying gasoline and diesel will be built from the Shymkent oil refinery (PetroKazakhstan Oil Products LLP) to the city of Almaty as part of the refinery's expansion project, National Company KazMunayGas (KMG) said in a Monday press release.KMG CEO Askat Khasenov got familiarized with the progress of the Shymkent refinery expansion project, which aims to double the refinery’s annual processing capacity from 6 million to 12 million tonnes by 2030, according to the press release.Currently, a framework agreement for the project is being finalized, after which a feasibility study phase will begin, KMG said.The company is also mulling over construction of a pipeline between Shymkent and Almaty to transport petroleum products (gasoline and diesel). This project will ensure reliable fuel supply to the densely populated region and will reduce dependence on rail transport, KMG said.Khasenov was also briefed on the progress of a project for the construction of a flare gas recovery unit and an LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) loading facility. The management of the Shymkent refinery also informed Khasenov about plans to extend the refinery’s maintenance cycle to three years.According to KMG, the Shymkent refinery processed over 5.74 million tonnes of crude in 2024. The yield of light petroleum products was 78.8% (72.2% in 2023), and the utilization rate was 85.8% (85.5%).In the 1st quarter of 2025, the refinery processed 1.51 million tonnes, which is nearly 4% above the target.The Shymkent refinery, built in 1985, is owned by Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas and China’s CNCP on a parity basis through joint venture PetroKazakhstan Oil Products LLP.There are three refineries in Kazakhstan. They are located in Shymkent (south Kazakhstan), Atyrau (west) and Pavlodar (east). (ICE ALMATY)
