SAMSUNG ELECTRO-MECHANICS DEFIES TARIFF PRESSURE THROUGH AUTO PARTS BIZ

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is seeking a way around the United States’ sweeping tariff pressures through its auto component business, as its flagship multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) is gaining greater attention for its use in the automotive sector. According to analysts on Wednesday, Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ sales for automotive MLCCs are expected to break above the 1 trillion won mark ($701.66 million), buoyed by stronger demands from carmakers developing self-driving vehicles. The company’s automotive MLCC sales stood at 970 billion won, occupying a 20 percent share of the global market. This represents a 7 percentage point improvement from the company’s market share in 2022. Given the trajectory, analysts anticipate the company will log over 1 trillion won in automotive MLCC sales this year, with iM Securities analyst Ko Eui-young anticipating 1.2 trillion won this year and 1.5 trillion won next year. The company’s automotive MLCC sales are anticipated to show sharper growth following a report Wednesday that the company was granted an increase in its supply for China’s electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD. The deal’s details were not disclosed, but industry officials assume it may be worth hundreds of billions of won. An MLCC plays a critical role in electronic circuits by storing electrical charge and releasing it when needed, thus stabilizing the flow of electricity to semiconductors. These capacitors have been commonly utilized in various semiconductor products, namely smartphones, but are now gaining greater attention for their use in autonomous vehicles. Approximately 10,000 MLCCs are required for a vehicle now in the market, with up to 8,000 extra units required depending on the level of autonomous technologies. (ICE SEOUL)
