INDONESIA EXPLORES INVESTORS FOR MODULAR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

a target to begin operations by 2030. Deputy Minister Nurul Ichwan highlighted the potential of modular or small-scale nuclear reactors as a cost-effective renewable energy option, though investors remain cautious and await clarity on Indonesia’s energy mix and nuclear’s role within it. Preparations will include showcasing the potential of nuclear energy, designing risk mitigation strategies, and conducting public outreach to build acceptance. While Indonesia already possesses nuclear technology, such as the plant in Serpong, broader implementation depends on social, environmental, and investor readiness. A recent meeting between MPR Deputy Chair Eddy Soeparno, climate envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and former UK PM Tony Blair emphasized the relevance of modular nuclear plants for Indonesia, given its archipelagic nature. As renewable sources in Java may be depleted by 2038, nuclear power is seen as a vital alternative, with West Kalimantan and Bangka Belitung considered for potential sites—though no final location has been chosen yet.Source: https://hijau.bisnis.com/read/20250423/652/1871333/indonesia-jajaki-investor-pembangkit-nuklir-modular (ICE GIACARTA)
