World Bank to back HPP's construction in Kyrgyzstan - govt press serviceThe World Bank is willing to provide comprehensive support to Kyrgyzstan to build the Kambarata HPP-1, the Kyrgyz government press service said in a statement.Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliyev held talks with World Bank Infrastructure Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia Charles Cormier on Wednesday, the statement said.In particular, the talks focused on the prospects for implementing the Kambarata HPP-1 construction project, which is of strategic significance for energy security and economic development of Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia, it said.The parties focused attention on the implementation of this project. An international company has been involved to draft an intergovernmental agreement between Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, Kasymaliyev said. The Kyrgyz prime minister said he hopes for these steps to allow the project to be submitted to the World Bank's Board of Directors as early as September-December 2025.For his part, Cormier reiterated the World Bank's readiness to fully support the HPP project and noted its importance for energy stability and sustainable development of the region.The parties expressed confidence in strengthening cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the World Bank in the development of infrastructure and successful implementation of joint projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the population and securing sustainable economic growth of the country, it said.The energy ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed an agreement on preparations for building the Kambarata HPP-1 in June 2024. Own funds of the company's founders, as well as borrowed and grant funds of international finance institutions and commercial banks are the main sources of funding the project.The 1,860 MW hydropower plant is expected to generate 5 billion kWh of electricity per year. Preliminary estimates indicate that the dam will be 256 meters high and the water volume accumulated at the hydropower plant may exceed 5 billion cubic meters. The Kyrgyz government said that the Kambarata HPP-1's first hydropower unit is expected to be put into operation in eight years.Kasymaliyev discussed the HPP construction with Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank Anna Bjerde the previous day, it said. "Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliyev held constructive talks with Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank Anna Bjerde during a working visit to Washington on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund's Spring Meetings," it said.
