NICOSIA’S HISTORIC OLIVE GROVE TO BE RELOCATED FOR MAJOR URBAN PROJECT

All olive trees from the historic grove in the “Metochi tou Kykkou” area of Nicosia will be uprooted and replanted in a newly designated green space at the center of the site as part of plans to transform the land into a mixed-use urban development. The area, owned by the Kykkos Monastery, has long been filled with olive and citrus trees. But after decades of serving as a peaceful green pocket in the capital, the land is now being developed into a sprawling residential and commercial zone.  As previously reported by Kathimerini, works are already underway on the 330,450 square-meter plot, bounded by Griva Digeni, Agios Prokopios, Makedonias and Kranidioti Avenues. The ambitious project will include office buildings, a public park, luxury apartments, entertainment and leisure facilities, a university, student housing, a hotel, and a medical center.  According to new information obtained by Kathimerini, the decision to replant rather than remove the olive trees was made in recognition of their age and cultural value. A special study was submitted to the Department of Environment prior to construction, determining that the olive trees could be safely relocated within the site.  Most of the trees will be replanted in the central area of the development, where a large public green space will be created. The remaining trees will be placed along the perimeter of the property. Experts note that, if done properly, the process of uprooting and replanting olive trees is safe and does not harm their health or longevity.  While the development marks a major shift in the landscape of this part of Nicosia, efforts are being made to preserve a small but symbolic part of the grove’s legacy.
