INDONESIA TO OPERATE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS BY 2030
Indonesia plans to begin operating nuclear power plants by 2030, according to the Power Supply Business Plan for 2025–2030, as announced by Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia during a National Energy Council (DEN) meeting. The government is currently finalizing the plan, which includes nuclear energy and energy buffer reserves, before submitting it to President Prabowo. There are 29 potential nuclear plant sites across the country, expected to generate between 45 and 54 gigawatts of electricity, with priority locations in West Kalimantan, Bangka Belitung, Southeast Sulawesi, and Halmahera in North Maluku. These plants are intentionally planned outside of Java to support economic growth in Central and Eastern Indonesia. However, challenges remain as these areas are prone to earthquakes. DEN member Agus Puji Prasetyono stressed the importance of selecting sites free from tsunamis, volcanoes, and active fault lines, highlighting the complexity of building nuclear infrastructure in such regions while still viewing it as essential to Indonesia’s long-term economic goals.Source: https://en.tempo.co/read/1998972/energy-minister-indonesia-to-operate-nuclear-power-plants-by-2030 (ICE GIACARTA)
