Kazakhstan fines KPO for environmental breachesKazakh authorities have imposed a 739.6 million tenge ($1.42 million) fine on the Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) consortium for environmental violations involving 264 metric tonnes of unauthorized emissions at the Karachaganak field in northwest Kazakhstan."Prosecutors confirmed KPO violated emissions standards by releasing 264 metric tonnes of excess pollutants. The consortium was fined under Article 328 of Kazakhstan’s Administrative Code for exceeding permitted environmental impact levels and has fully paid the 739.6 million tenge ($1.42 million) penalty," the West Kazakhstan environmental prosecutor’s office said in a statement.KPO operates the Karachaganak field under a 40-year production-sharing agreement established in 1997. The consortium comprises Shell (29.25%) through its wholly owned subsidiary BG Karachaganak Limited, Eni (29.25%), Chevron (18%), LUKOIL (13.5%), and KazMunayGas (10%).The official exchange rate as of April 22 stands at 521.53 tenge per U.S. dollar.
