Tokayev orders reduction of water deficit in Mangystau RegionKazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has instructed the government and the Samruk-Kazyna Fund to take measures to reduce the water deficit in the Mangystau region, as reported by the press service of the head of state."Given the high rates of natural population growth and migration, providing residents with drinking water remains one of the region’s key challenges," Tokayev said during a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Mangystau region. The President highlighted that due to insufficient desalination capacity at MAEK, there is an acute shortage of drinking water, particularly during summer. In three cities and 59 rural settlements, despite centralized water supply systems, water is distributed on a schedule. The daily deficit amounts to 23,000 cubic meters."Construction of six desalination plants and facilities is underway. The launch of the Kenderli project will provide drinking water to residents of Zhanaozen, the rural districts of Tenge, Kyzylsay, Rakhat, and Kenderli, while also creating additional jobs. It is crucial to complete all work by the scheduled deadline in May," Tokayev said.He noted that the 2023 reconstruction of the Astrakhan-Mangyshlak main water pipeline increased its daily throughput capacity from 110,000 to 170,000 cubic meters."However, it still cannot fully meet the needs of the western region. Additionally, the water supplied through it requires deep purification, raising the cost of drinking water. The government must work with the Samruk-Kazyna Fund to resolve the drinking water shortage in the region," the President emphasized. (ICE ALMATY)
