Kazakhstan says no immediate plans for counter-tariffs on U.S. goods, cites EAEU process – Trade Ministry (Part 2)Kazakhstan currently has no plans for retaliatory tariffs against U.S. imports, the Kazakh Trade Ministry announced Thursday, noting such measures would require Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) approval."The tariffs announced by the U.S. affect just under 5% of our exports to the United States, with the rest remaining unaffected. The 5% subject to tariffs face a 10% duty. The majority of Kazakhstan exports, 92%, face no additional charges, and there are currently no reciprocal tariff increases planned," Deputy Minister of Trade and Integration Zhanel Kushukova told reporters in the Senate corridors.Kushukova explained that Kazakhstan cannot unilaterally adjust import duty rates as a member state of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). "We have binding commitments under the unified customs tariff covering all five member nations," she said. "Any modifications to import duties require collective approval by all EAEU states," she added.U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced retaliatory tariffs of 27% on several trade partners, including Kazakhstan. However, on April 9, the U.S. suspended the measure for 90 days for more than 75 countries that sought dialogue. During this period, affected nations must pay a minimum 10% tariff. Kazakhstan welcomed the moratorium. The Kazakh government also plans to hold consultations with U.S. officials to discuss avoiding additional tariffs.According to the Trade Ministry, the U.S. tariffs will impact only 4.8% of Kazakhstan’s total exports to the U.S., primarily affecting oil, uranium, silver, ferroalloys and some other goods. These categories, making up 92% of exports, are exempt under Trump’s decree on adjusting tariffs to address trade imbalances.Additional tariffs are expected to apply to specific groups of goods, with exports totaling $95.2 million in 2024. These include phosphorus ($15.9 million), ferrosilicon ($12.7 million), lenses ($4.1 million), wheat gluten ($4 million), and ammonium nitrate ($2.4 million).According to the ministry's information, in 2024, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the United States increased by 4% to $4.2 billion, with Kazakhstan's exports to the United States rising by 30.6% to $2 billion. US imports to Kazakhstan amounted to $2.2 billion. (ICE ALMATY)
