INDONESIA BEGINS TARIFF TALKS WITH US IN WASHINGTON

A delegation of high-ranking Indonesian government officials are in Washington, D.C., on April 16-23, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, to negotiate a reduction of the 32% reciprocal tariffs recently imposed by the US on Indonesian imports. In addition to Hartarto, the team, which was sent by President Prabowo Subianto, includes Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Foreign Minister Sugiono, National Economic Council Deputy Mari Elka Pangestu, and First Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono. During their visit, the officials are scheduled to hold meetings with US Trade Representative (USTR), Department of Commerce, State Department, and Treasury Department. Hartarto said on Tuesday (15/4) that the visit to the US aims to revitalise bilateral economic ties and deliver concrete, specific outcomes. According to him, the Indonesian government had prepared a “non-paper”, i.e. an informal document to support the talks, and aims to secure “specific and pragmatic outcomes.” The delegation is also open to negotiating a limited free trade agreement (FTA) or revisiting the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) previously held with the US. Hartarto noted there would be two to three negotiation rounds covering a wide range of issues. (ICE GIACARTA)
