INDONESIA PUSHES ASEAN TO ADOPT SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

Indonesia’s Minister of National Development Planning, Rachmat Pambudy, has urged the ASEAN to adopt a sustainable and data-driven fisheries management system, inspired by the model implemented by the European Union. Speaking in Hanoi during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier and Belgian Ambassador Karl Van den Bossche, Pambudy discussed a proposed triangular cooperation between Indonesia, Vietnam, and the EU aimed at combating illegal fishing and promoting sustainable fisheries. The collaboration leverages each party’s strengths: Indonesia's vast maritime resources, Vietnam's advanced fishing industry, and the EU's expertise in governance and monitoring. Pambudy emphasized that this partnership could serve as a model for broader ASEAN implementation, calling the initiative mutually beneficial and strategically important. He highlighted the need for shared monitoring systems and traceability mechanisms, and proposed that ASEAN adopt regulations on fishing quotas and catch sizes similar to the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, to ensure long-term sustainability and collective regional welfare.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/351985/indonesia-pushes-asean-to-adopt-sustainable-fisheries-management (ICE GIACARTA)
