Indonesia is intensifying efforts to finalize the Indonesia–Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (IEAEU FTA), aiming to strengthen its trade ties with key Eastern European and Central Asian markets. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto confirmed that negotiations are in their final stage, with 11 out of 15 issues already resolved during the fifth round in July 2024. In line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, Indonesia is targeting the completion of the agreement by the first half of 2025, after which the legal scrubbing process will begin. The FTA is seen as a strategic move to diversify Indonesia's export destinations beyond traditional markets. The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, and Belarus, offers Indonesia access to a large and less saturated market. As global trade faces rising tariff tensions, Indonesian authorities view the IEAEU FTA as a timely opportunity to lower trade barriers, boost exports, and promote economic cooperation.
